![]() As the face ages, its tissues begin to lose natural collagen and volume, leading to facial sagging, lines, creases, and thinning lips. A variety of injectable treatments are available to address many of these changes. This selection ranges from BOTOX® Cosmetic, to soften and smooth facial lines and furrows, to your choice of fillers to fill in lines, lips, and support sagging areas. Our staff will be pleased to help you decide which injectables would be most appropriate for you. All injectables are administered in the office using topical numbing creams and local anesthesia. Treatments usually take about 30 minutes. Temporary swelling and bruising may occasionally occur; however, in most cases, a normal schedule can be resumed in 24 to 36 hours.
In attempt to lessen bruising, with any injectable treatment, you should consider stopping the following list of medications 1-2 weeks prior to injection. However, if you have heart related problems (vascular stents, atrial fibrillation, etc.) PLEASE consult with your heart doctor prior stopping any medications. As with any procedure there is a chance of bruising and/or bleeding. If you are unsure about which medications to stop please speak with one of our nurses.

The Martin Center is honored to be a National Training Facility for BOTOX® Cosmetic. Dr. Martin was chosen by BOTOX® Cosmetic to be a certified trainer. Doctors from all over the country come to the Martin Center to attend his training sessions. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are a simple 5-minute procedure designed to address the dynamic wrinkles of the forehead and eye regions. Initially FDA approved in 1989 for treatment of a spastic eyelid problem called blepharospasm, it received cosmetic approval for the treatment of glabellar frown lines in April 2002. We have been using BOTOX® Cosmetic injections for cosmetic applications since 1998 with excellent results. Our patients have been very satisfied with the magical effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic. BOTOX® Cosmetic works by stopping muscle contraction, which then relaxes the overlying skin to improve the skin wrinkling. An injection is required for placement of the BOTOX® Cosmetic into the muscle. Once injected, the BOTOX® Cosmetic is absorbed into the nerve ending which is responsible for stimulating the muscle to contract. The BOTOX® Cosmetic prevents the release of acetylcholine from the nerve, which is required for stimulation of the muscle. This basically stops communication between the nerve and the muscle. Injections are performed in the office using a very small needle. A topical anesthetic ointment is applied to the skin prior to treatment and can render the injections almost painless. The needle passes through the skin into the muscle layer where tiny droplets are placed. The effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic are not immediate, and in fact, will take about 3 to 5 days to appear, with the full effects taking up to 4 weeks to develop. You may resume normal activity immediately, however, you may notice a small amount of temporary redness at the injection sites. We recommend staying elevated for 4 hours after treatment and not massaging the areas of injection during this time period. Smiling and frowning every 15 minutes after the treatment for several hours may enhance the absorption of the BOTOX® Cosmetic and thus enhance the effects. When performed properly, BOTOX® Cosmetic injections can lessen or eliminate frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet lines. The average length of effect of BOTOX® Cosmetic is about 4 months. For some individuals, the length of effect can be more or less. Endoscopic Wrinkle Procedure For individuals who would like a more permanent solution for the glabellar frown lines, a selective endoscopic wrinkle treatment can be performed. This procedure requires two small incisions in the scalp behind the hairline. Using an endoscope and a camera, some of the muscles which cause the frown lines are clipped to decrease their activity. This is a simple 30-minute procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia only or with light sedation. There would be a brief recovery time due to some initial swelling and bruising. What is XEOMIN®?Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) recently received FDA approval for treatment of glabellar rhytids (frown lines between the eyebrows), making it the third neuromuscular agent in the US to receive such approval, along with Botox® and Dysport®. Botox (Allergan) is the most common aesthetic treatment/cosmetic procedure in the world, and has an excellent and proven track record of safety. Xeomin is based on this excellent product, and is similar in action to Botox. In the FDA studies, it was shown to have similar onset of action and duration as Botox. What are the cosmetic uses of XEOMIN®?Xeomin, like Botox and Dysport, is FDA-approved for cosmetic treatment of the 11's (frown lines between the eyebrows). Other common uses for all three products include forehead lines and crow's feet lines. Xeomin also received prior FDA clearance for treatment of cervical dystonia (abnormal neck pain) and blepharospasm (eyelid spasm). Xeomin is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to the active substance botulinum toxin type A or to any of the components in the formulation and in the presence of infection at the proposed injection site(s). How does XEOMIN® work?XEOMIN is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles to relax the muscles and decrease their activity. XEOMIN works at the neuromuscular junction, blocking the release of a chemical messenger-acetylcholine-that conveys the signal from nerve terminals and causes muscle fibers to contract. Is XEOMIN® the same as Botox?Xeomin, Botox and Dysport are all botulinum toxin products, and they all work to relax facial muscles and prevent wrinkle formation, but the products are not the same. They all have unique names, and differ in dosing and usage. Xeomin does not need to be refrigerated, unlike the other two products. What are potential advantages of XEOMIN® over Botox?Xeomin has been manufactured in a unique way to remove any accessory proteins/additives, and this theoretically can result in decreased chance of antibody formation and resistance to the product. Botox has a much longer track record of safety for a variety of cosmetic and medical use indications, and is the gold standard product against which other newer products are compared to. ®
What is Dysport?Prescription Dysport is an injection used to temporarily improve the look of your frown lines without changing the look of your whole face. The untreated facial muscles still work normally, allowing you to freely show facial expressions, such as smiling, in untreated areas. Dysport is a formulation that has been shown to deliver temporary improvements in moderate to severe frown lines, even with repeat treatments. So, the effect of repeat treatment with Dysport may be comparable to your first use. How does Dysport work? With just 1 injection into each of 5 points between and over the eyebrows, Dysport blocks the signal from the nerve to the muscles, ultimately resulting in a reduction of muscle activity and temporarily preventing contraction of the muscles that cause frown lines. You should not be treated with Dysport more frequently than every 90 days. Treatment with prescription Dysport can temporarily improve the look of your moderate to severe frown lines. Treatment generally takes just 10 to 20 minutes. Can I use Dysport and still look like me?Prescription Dysport is an injection used to temporarily improve the look of your moderate to severe frown lines without changing the look of your whole face. The untreated facial muscles still work normally, allowing you to freely show facial expressions, such as smiling, in untreated areas. What is the most important information I should know about Dysport?Dysport may cause serious side effects that can be life threatening. Call your doctor or get medical help right away if you have any of these problems after treatment with Dysport:
These symptoms can happen hours to weeks after you receive an injection of Dysport. These problems could make it unsafe for you to drive a car or do other dangerous activities. Are there any reasons I should not be treated with Dysport?Do not have Dysport treatment if you: are allergic to Dysport or any of its ingredients (see the end of the Medication Guide for a list of ingredients), are allergic to cow's milk protein, had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product (such as Myobloc® or Botox®), or have a skin infection at the planned injection site. Dysport should not be used in children or in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Dysport may not be right for you if: you have surgical changes to your face, very weak muscles in the treatment area, your face looks very different from side to side, the injection site is inflamed, you have droopy eyelids or sagging eyelid folds, deep facial scars, thick oily skin, or if your wrinkles can't be smoothed by spreading them apart. How often can I get injections of Dysport? You should wait at least 90 days between Dysport treatments. The safety of Dysport has been studied in up to 12 repeated treatments. Clinical studies demonstrated continued efficacy with up to four repeated treatments. What kinds of professionals administer Dysport?Dysport may be administered by dermatologists, primary care physicians, cosmetic aestheticians, plastic surgeons, and other healthcare professionals who are licensed to administer Dysport. Go to Find a doctor to locate a healthcare professional who is licensed to administer Dysport in your area. What should I tell my doctor before getting Dysport?Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, including if you have: a disease that affects your muscles and nerves (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease], myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome), allergies to any botulinum toxin product, had any side effect from any botulinum toxin product in the past, a breathing problem (such as asthma or emphysema), swallowing problems, bleeding problems, diabetes, a slow heart beat or other problem with your heart rate or rhythm, plans to have surgery, had surgery on your face, weakness of your forehead muscles (such as trouble raising your eyebrows), drooping eyelids, or any other change in the way your face normally looks. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant or breastfeed. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal and other natural products. Using Dysport with certain other medicines may cause serious side effects. Do not start any new medicines while taking Dysport without talking to your doctor first. Especially tell your doctor if you: have received any other botulinum toxin product in the last four months, have received injections of botulinum toxin, such as Myobloc® (rimabotulinumtoxinB) or Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA) in the past (be sure your doctor knows exactly which product you received), have recently received an antibiotic by injection, take muscle relaxants, take an allergy or cold medicine, or take a sleep medicine. How long has Dysport been used?Though approved in the United States for aesthetic use in April 2009, Dysport has a history of use in other countries since 1991. Outside the U.S., it was first approved for aesthetic use in 2001. What about side effects of Dysport? The most common side effects are nose and throat irritation, headache, injection site pain, injection site skin reaction, upper respiratory tract infection, eyelid swelling, eyelid drooping, sinus inflammation, and nausea. In some cases, Dysport may cause serious side effects, such as swallowing or breathing problems, that may be life threatening. What should I avoid while taking Dysport?Dysport may cause loss of strength or general muscle weakness, blurred vision, or drooping eyelids within hours to weeks of taking Dysport. If this happens, do not drive a car, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities. Dysport is a prescription injection for temporary improvement in the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults less than 65 years of age. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Spread of Toxin Effects: In some cases, the effects of Dysport and all botulinum toxin products may affect areas of the body away from the injection site. These effects can cause symptoms of a serious condition called botulism. Symptoms of botulism can happen hours to weeks after injection and may include swallowing and breathing problems, loss of strength and muscle weakness all over the body, double vision, blurred vision and drooping eyelids, hoarseness or change or loss of voice, trouble saying words clearly, or loss of bladder control. Swallowing and breathing problems can be life threatening and there have been reports of death. The risk of symptoms is probably greatest in children and adults treated for muscle spasms, particularly in those patients who have underlying medical conditions that could make these symptoms more likely. The toxic effects have been reported at doses similar to those used to treat muscle spasms in the neck. Lower doses, in both approved and unapproved uses, have also caused toxic effects. This includes treatment of children and adults for muscle spasms. These effects could make it unsafe for you to drive a car, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities. Do not have Dysport treatment if you: are allergic to Dysport or any of its ingredients (see the end of the Medication Guide for a list of ingredients), are allergic to cow’s milk protein, had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product, such as Myobloc® or Botox®, or have a skin infection at the planned injection site. The dose of Dysport is not the same as the dose of any other botulinum toxin product. The dose of Dysport cannot be compared to the dose of any other botulinum toxin product you may have used. Dysport may not be right for you if: you have surgical changes to your face, very weak muscles in the treatment area, your face looks very different from side to side, the injection site is inflamed, you have droopy eyelids or sagging eyelid folds, deep facial scars, thick oily skin, or if your wrinkles can’t be smoothed by spreading them apart. Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, including if you have: a disease that affects your muscles and nerves (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease], myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome), allergies to any botulinum toxin product or had any side effect from any botulinum toxin product in the past, a breathing problem (such as asthma or emphysema), swallowing problems, bleeding problems, diabetes, or a slow heart beat or other problem with your heart rate or rhythm, plans to have surgery, had surgery on your face, weakness of your forehead muscles (such as trouble raising your eyebrows), drooping eyelids, or any other change in the way your face normally looks. Patients with a disease that affects muscles and nerves who are treated with typical doses of Dysport may have a higher risk of serious side effects, including severe swallowing and breathing problems. Human Albumin This product contains albumin taken from human plasma. Steps taken during donor screening and product manufacturing processes make the risk of spreading viral diseases extremely rare. In theory, there is also an extremely rare risk of contracting Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). No cases of spread of viral diseases or CJD have ever been reported for albumin. Allergic Reaction to Injecting in the Skin It is not known if an allergic reaction can be caused by injecting Dysport into the skin. The safety of treating excessive sweating with Dysport is not known. Common Side Effects The most common side effects are nose and throat irritation, headache, injection site pain, injection site skin reaction, upper respiratory tract infection, eyelid swelling, eyelid drooping, sinus inflammation, and nausea. Use In Specific Populations Dysport should not be used in children or in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Ask your doctor if Dysport is right for you. |
