Dermabrasion is a procedure, which mechanically removes layers of skin by sanding the surface. There are two forms of dermabrasion. There is microdermabrasion, which is very superficial in depth of treatment and requires no recovery. The effects of a single treatment are subtle, but over time and with a series of treatments, a noticeable change in skin texture may be seen. The more aggressive form of dermabrasion uses a rotating wheel, which removes the skin layer by layer. This method is commonly used for treatment of acne scarring and deep wrinkles around the mouth and for blending of scars. There is an initial recovery period of 7 to 10 days. At this point, makeup can be worn; however, there will be varying degrees of redness of the skin which can take 6 months or longer to resolve. For correction of acne scarring, repeated treatments may be required for optimum results.
